some more glitch

December 29th, 2009

One of my readers, Josh over at sour.org (by the way, go check him out – he’s a fantastic artist) commented to one of the previous entries about glitch-hop and mentioned the Glitch Mob.  He’s right, they deserve a mention because they are one of the pioneering glitch acts.  Here’s one of my favorites by them, called Nalepa.

While we’re at it, let me give you a couple more glitch tracks I’ve personally been enjoying recently.  Here’s a glitchy rework of Ginuwine’s old track Pony, done by Wolf Intervals.  Fun stuff here.

Here’s another glitch cover of an old track.  If the party is live enough, you can never go wrong with some Bee Gees, and this version of Stayin Alive is “proper”, as my buddy DJ Carbon put it.

New hotness

December 24th, 2009

Dubstep and Glitch Hop are two relatively new flavors of music, at least to my ears.  I was lucky enough to get a chance to check out both styles live recently, when I saw LA Producer Nosaj Thing open for Bassnectar at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS.  Here are a couple bombs from those guys.

dubsteppitty goodness

December 22nd, 2009

Dubstep, being the most recently invented genre of electronic music, is really starting to gain traction.  In fact I had a gig the night before Thanksgiving at Rock Isand Live, a place that usually wants to hear all the usual top 40 club music, but when I started playing dubstep, the shit went OFF.  It was kind of amazing.

Here’s a couple tracks for you, along with their dubstep remixes.  It’s nice to listen to the original first – that will help you appreciate the aspects of the remix that make it good.

First, here is Phoenix with 1901.  You might recognize it from this Cadillac commercial.

And here’s one of my favorite songs from the summer which is only just now starting to get radio play around here:

Good stuff, right?

Let’s talk House

December 22nd, 2009

Every now and then I stumble across a bouncy, ridiculous, bubble-gummy, poppy, cheesy-synth-riff-using, formula-driven, overproduced house track that I just can’t stop listening to.  Today I’m going to infect you with some of those sounds.  You’re welcome.

This one’s fairly mundane throughout the first half, but it’s just a buildup, setting you up for the ridiculous happiness that happens after the breakdown.

See what I mean? It’s so predictable and cheesy and simple but you can’t help but feel a little giddy when you hear it.  Or a lot, in my case.

Here’s another.  This one’s actually been getting a fair amount of radio play, and with good reason.  Drop this at the end of the night when everyone’s all drunk and happy and it will jump OFF, I promise.

This one’s quite a bit older, but still just simple, great, danceable house.

Okay, last one (for today).  You guys have heard of Eric Prydz, right?  You know, Call On Me, with the weird video of the 80s folks working out in the gym, the one that’s more sexually charged than you ever thought anything with an 80s theme could be?  And his slightly lesser known track (you’ll know it when you hear it) Pjanoo? Yep, that guy.

This is what happens when he gets his hands on a Calvin Harris jam.  It’s a lot less bubble-gummy than the others, and pretty damn good.

I got scolded

December 2nd, 2009

The night before Thanksgiving I played a gig at Rock Island Live, and was scolded (and rightly so) for not having Bad Romance.  The ladies love their Gaga.  So I went out and scoured the interwebz for every version of Bad Romance I could find.  After previewing no less than fifteen remixes (the remixers love their Gaga), I think this here’s the one I like.  It also seems to be the one everyone else likes – it seems to be quite popular.  But I’m squelching my urge to be indie or underground or a snob or whatever you want to call it.  I won’t present you with the most obscure or weird remix – I’ll play you the good one.
